What size urn do I need for ashes?

To help you with size and choosing the correct product we have a simple step by step guide.

  1. Start by taking some digital scales and the container of ashes that you would have received from the crematorium or funeral director.
  2. Place this box onto the digital scales and weigh the ashes.
  3. If they are contained in a poly-tub, deduct 230g from the additional weight. If they are in a cardboard box, deduct 200g from the weight.
  4. Our rule of thumb is that every kilogram of cremated remains equates to 1 litre of ashes.
  5. This means if you have approximately 3 kilograms of cremated remains you will need to purchase an urn of between 3-4 litres in capacity.
  6. We have products to suit all needs, available from 0.025 litre through to 8 litre capacities.
  7. If you are unsure about sizing an urn or keepsake, please call us on 01376 297818 and we will be happy to assist you.

It can be difficult to know which option is best for you. A good place to start is to decide if you want the urn or keepsake to be kept indoors or outdoors, possibly in the garden. You may also want it to be biodegradable, if you are looking for an environmentally-friendly option.

Our range of glass urns and keepsakes are incredibly tactile and colourful. The glass memory pebbles hold about 4 to 5 tablespoons of ashes, whereas the glass cuddle stones hold 1 to 2 tablespoons, and both can hold a lock of hair for a burial keepsake too. Our full size luxury glass urns are hand-blown and they offer a modern option to hold an average set of adult ashes.  We also offer hand-blown glass child urns that are flecked with stunning 24ct gold leaf, designed to safely hold the ashes of a baby or child, or a larger keepsake of adult ashes.

There are more traditional options too, such as our hand-engraved brass urns, which are available in the following sizes: Adult, Child, Companion and Keepsake. Hand made by skilled artisans in India, they are elegant and ornate, all with threaded lids for added security. Alternatively, we also offer traditional wooden caskets, which are ideal for interments and burial.

If a woven coffin was used for the funeral, you may even choose one of our natural woven scatter tubes or hand woven ashes caskets, to reflect the choice of coffin. The materials used are incredibly tactile, with a soft cotton lining and presentation bag. They are also 100% biodegradable, making them suitable for ground burial and interment where metal and plastic are not allowed.

Keepsakes are perfect if you want to carry a small token of ashes or a lock of hair with you, or have something smaller to hold when you need comfort. Our sterling silver memorial jewellery is ideal if you want something small and discreet, especially for a special occasion – possibly a pair of cufflinks or a pendant for your wedding day. If you would prefer something wooden or simple, then the Les Petits Vents could be the best choice for you. As you hold them, the wood warms up and provides great comfort.

We are happy to talk you through your options to help you make a decision, so please feel free to contact us.

Some of our products will have specific instructions listed on their individual pages, for example, the biodegradable urns each have their own guide.

If a product does not have specific instructions, we always advise using an appropriately sized funnel to guide the ashes into the vessel. Alternatively, if you do not have a funnel you could use a piece of card, or a few sheets of paper for added structure, and roll to make a cone shape.

We offer an interring service for all of our jewellery items, so you do not need to worry about doing it yourself – we handle it all for you!

When interring ashes, it is best to place the vessel on a large flat surface, with something soft underneath to prevent scratching or slipping. Always do it slowly and carefully, away from any breeze or draught. If possible, have someone there to help you in case the ashes are heavy and to keep the vessel still.

Scattering a loved one’s ashes is a common choice, often done in a memorable location or at a crematorium or burial ground. We offer two types of scatter tube, our woven scatter tubes and our printed scatter tubes, to make the process much easier.

The printed scatter tubes have a tab at the top which you push to open, allowing for a steady and controlled pour. The woven scatter tubes have the benefit of an internal bag which can be opened and tied as necessary, which allows you to scatter the ashes in multiple locations.

When choosing a location, always check if there are any restrictions or rules beforehand. You can often find this information easily online.

Scatter in a secluded area, being mindful of other people and wildlife, particularly if scattering from a height. Hold the tube at waist height and gently scatter into the wind, away from you.

You may want to share cherished memories, a few words, or even a poem – or you may prefer to just have quiet reflection. It is best to discuss this beforehand, so that friends or family can prepare something, if they wish to.

At Memorielle we do not offer an engraving service, however there are lots of products in our range that are suitable for engraving.

We recommend purchasing an item and checking you are happy with it first, and then taking it to a professional engraver or jeweller. This way you can be more involved in the process and work directly with the person doing the engraving, to ensure it is exactly how you would like it.

Please note, once an item has been used or engraved, it cannot be returned or refunded.

We inter all of our jewellery items for you, using our fast and secure interring service. Once you have placed your order, we will send you a kit that includes:

  • A pre-paid envelope to return the ashes to us, via Royal Mail Tracked 24 or 48
  • Two secure plastic pouches for the ashes or hair – one should be returned to us, and the other should be kept with you
  • Confirmation of your order

We only require 1 teaspoon of ashes, or a very small amount of hair, as the jewellery pieces only hold a token.

All jewellery is delivered beautifully packaged, with a signed certificate of authenticity that confirms who interred the ashes, for added peace of mind. Any unused ashes will be returned with your order.

Once we received your returned ashes pack, we aim to deliver your order within 2-3 working days!
